Understanding Canadian Immigration Language Requirements

When considering a move to Canada, whether temporary to study, or permanently to work or reside, Brace Law is dedicated to assisting you with all your Immigration Law matters, including language requirements. Understanding that Immigration procedures can be complex and confusing—and that the consequences of missing information, passed deadlines, or errors in your application are serious and costly—it is important to retain an experienced and knowledgeable immigration lawyer to guide you through the process.

Brace Law can assist you with pursuing your goal of studying in Canada at the educational institution of your choice by obtaining a study permit, help qualify you to work in Canada by obtaining a work permit (LMIA, LMIA exempt and Open Work Permits), and assist you in obtaining permanent residency by helping you qualify for a federal or Ontario Provincial Nominee program.

To be considered for an application, most economic immigration categories require you to complete a language test where you are scored on your ability to read, write, speak, and listen. The reasoning here is that your language competency will determine your ability to establish yourself in Canada’s economy. This is the same requirement for potential foreign students, as language competency will aid in your success within Canadian academic settings.

The minimum requirement score will vary depending on which application program you are pursuing. English language tests can be obtained through the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). French language tests can be obtained through Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF Canada) and Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF Canada). It is important to note that there is no preferred test, and the results from each test are valued equally, with a unified scoring system provided by the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. Therefore, you can decide which test is best suited for you. Language test results are only valid for a 24-month period.

Brace Law understands the importance of qualifying and achieving a high result for the language proficiency test when you want to study, work, or live in Canada. Language tests are also required for all Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program applications. As a result, Brace Law has established an educational program designed to not only aid in preparation for the upcoming exam, but to also help you achieve a high score. Brace Law has qualified teachers on staff who prepare you for your International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) examination. Brace Law’s teachers are trained and certified in Ontario, with both experience teaching English to non-native speakers and knowledge of language requirements in Canada.
